When I arrived home last weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to find a large envelope from my “Trucker Buddy” class located in Pennsylvania.
I opened the envelope to find many letters and hand drawn pictures from the second grade class. The teacher wrote a letter sharing about the cold weather they were experiencing and how they have missed many school days already this year due to snow and ice.
This year, the students are learning how to write in cursive. They have mastered 15 letters of the alphabet since the beginning of the year. They are also learning to add and subtract two digit numbers. In Science, they are learning about life cycles. Last week it was the pumpkin and this week it is the frog. I remember learning these things and it brings back memories of when I was in second grade.
Their classroom has a large area rug which includes a map of the United States on it. The students are enjoying this tool to help them learn more about our country. I wrote back to them and asked questions in relation to states where I’ve been traveling lately. It’s their job to find and follow the states from their origination to destination. They get to point out and follow my path of travel.
This packet which was sent to me included a letter from each student. They are currently learning how to write a “friendly letter” and so they wrote to me for practice as part of their learning process. One student even made me a special card when he was bored at home during a snow day. He wanted something to do since it was miserably cold outside and he took the time to think of me and create something special.
Some of the kids have asked in their letters if I’m going to visit them in person? I’m trying to work it into my schedule to see them soon. The students really do appreciate when you come to visit and they love seeing the truck. It’s always a highlight in the year when I get to visit my Trucker Buddy class. This is a great program and one you will find that brings many rewards.
