I am looking forward to next weekend as I’ll be traveling to my home state of Pennsylvania. As Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, my thoughts turn to making a visit to see my own Mother and enjoying some family time. It seems no matter where I live or how far I travel there will always be a special place in my heart for that place I call “home.” Each year during the spring, it’s nice to visit family and friends and participate in an event that has brought me much joy over the years.

If you happen to be in Pennsylvania near the Lancaster area, I invite you attend or participate in an annual tradition. I’m talking about the upcoming 26th Annual Make a Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy to be held on Sunday, May 10, 2015. The Convoy will be held at the Burle Industrial Park at 1000 New Holland Avenue (Rt.23) Lancaster, PA. The convoy departs at 1:30pm and travels from Lancaster to Ephrata and back. The event runs from 8:30am to 5:00pm. People come from across the United States for this day to help raise awareness and funds for Make a Wish Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley.

Make a Wish grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience. Over the last 25 years this particular event began with 40 trucks and has grown to as many as 450 participating today. As many as 100 wish children have been passengers in the trucks during the convoy. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of getting to know these special children and their families. It’s such a pleasure to have them ride with me each year. To watch their faces light up and be able to put a smile on their face makes it all worth it. The kids get to sit in the passenger seat of my truck as we roll by thousands of cheering, clapping and horn blowing crowds who have lined the streets and banks along the route to cheer them on. With flags waving and horns blowing, it’s always a special experience one doesn’t easily forget. Many of these children have daily struggles that you and I cannot even imagine. If I can be a part of making just one day a little brighter then I’m all in. This is an opportunity for my fellow drivers to come together and contribute to the community.

Have fun. The trucking industry does more good things than just move freight. People need to know this.

Sounds like a very fulfilling way to spend a weekend. I hope it turns out better than it has in the past. If it wasn't so far away I would participate for sure.
