There are many options as far as hands free are concerned. From being wired direct to the phone to wireless, over the head, around the neck, or ear buds, it's just a matter of how much you want to spend. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's the best there is. I've seen ear bud types that work just fine for less than ten dollars, there may be some background noise but one can still make and receive calls. I've also seen headsets that cost over three hundred dollars that weren't as good as the ones that came with my phone.

Noise cancelling headsets, it seems to me, are necessary in the trucking environment. Background noise, from road, wind, other people talking, or walking across a parking lot, can be a great inconvenience to whomever you are trying to have a conversation with.

Along with smart phones, headsets are becoming smart also, answer with the touch of a button or say "answer" into the mic and your call is answered. Voice dialing, voice note taking, send and receive texts or e-mail thru your headset without touching the phone, these "smart" headsets have many options that can make your life much easier.

We have had many brands of headsets over the years; they all have done the job it was designed to do. Blue Parrot, Silverado, LG, Bose, and now we have a Plantronics Voyager Legend. This latest headset talks to you, it tells you how much talk time is remaining, which phone it's connected to, when there's an incoming call it tells you who is calling and gives you options of answering or declining the call all by voice. In the instruction manual there is a list of commands, all you have to do is say a command and it complies. Talk time is good, standby time is great, noise canceling works well, and I can hear the calling party well without having the volume turned up as loud as it will go, along with the other features, I think t is a good investment. Did I mention it's very small, a bonus.

Talk time is important to us as we have conference calls that last for hours sometimes. Standby time is important as well, I seem to forget to charge mine and it's maddening to answer a call just to have the headset die in the best part of a story.

Whatever you want a headset to do, I’m sure there's one made to do it. Do the research, try them out, and ask others what they use, but don't shop on price alone. Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you get more than you pay for, sometimes you don't get what you wanted or paid for.

Over the years we have went through way to many headsets... I like the one headset does it all, I can listen to music, books and still receive a call and the best part is noise canceling. Someday they will work better when we are outside and it is windy but we have not found that head set yet.

We were having problems with static and the conversation cutting out. We finally decided it wasn't our phone or headset but just poor signal in the remote locations we were working. Likely not a problem in populated areas and running highways and interstates. We installed a Wilson dual band cell phone signal booster which seemed to help this summer. Hopefully we'll get a better chance to test it next summer.

I agree with you Bob, you have to shop around and do your research. Your last paragraph says it all.
