I was very pleased with the recording of a new fuel record with my current 2011 Cascadia and Detroit Diesel DD15 Engine.

This tankful took me from Meridian, MS. to Charlotte, NC. I also picked up in Charlotte and delivered to Swedesboro, NJ. From there, I picked up in Newark, Delaware and refueled in Mebane, NC. My shipments on this run were light. This aided me as three quarters of the route included my gross vehicle weight at 55,000 lbs. For approximately one quarter of the trip, I was only 40,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. I have run this corridor in the past and it’s difficult to get good fuel mileage with the traffic congestion along this route.

This week, I experienced five major traffic jams in which a few of them left me sitting for hours at a time.
My previous fuel fill up record was 9.37 on paper. This fill up by calculator came in at 9.629 and a whopping 9.92 on the dash. My worst fuel record to date was during a terrible snowstorm and I ended up with 6.8 mpg. My lifetime average on this truck is 8.6 mpg.

Granted, this new record had its advantages and disadvantages along the way and it’s just another record… not an average.

Sure is a lot better than the 290 Cummins in this old truck picture. Believe I obtained between 4 and 5mpg with it. Detroit Diesels using that old 2 cycle technology, did worse by its design principles. The main reason why not too many 2 cycles are left around anymore. Those motors had a unique sound of their own - especially a V-12 with open pipes. The other benefit was very little vibration, something that the Cummins had plenty of at 650 idle. Detroit was smart enough to know better than to hold onto those bull elephant motors, especially for trucking. Thats why they converted over to a 4 cycle turbo design.

I failed to mention that this is the first time we ever had a truck, let alone two, avg in the 8's. I'm very pleased.

Awesome mpg's. I did have one of my Cascadias avg an impressive 8.02 mpg for the 3rd quarter of this year. That was a milestone for the Freightliners in my fleet. It was beat only by a 2002 KW T-800 with a 6NZ CAT that avg'd 8.07.
