Clean Sweep

This business is made up of little things. One of the simplest things is sweeping out a trailer. At my age, I don't like climbing in and out of trailers. I still do it, but I don't like it. If I do have to clean up a trailer from the ground I will carry a trash bag in with me and put the trash in the garbage bag. It is rare to get complimented for a clean trailer. Clean trailers rarely get noticed. Dirty trailer do.

Dirty trailers can disrupt operations. If a customer refuses to load a trailer it can disrupt service. More than once I have had to sweep out drop trailers at customers that other drivers have dropped. I don't like it, but can live with that. It takes just a few minutes. It is an inconvenience. There are times thought that not having that trailer available and ready can cause a disruption. A drop load can turn into a low priority live load and cause the next driver a lengthy delay.

When I was a meat hauler, I carried my brooms, spare rags, and a bottle of unscented cleaner. Special “reefer” brooms are available. They can sweep into the grooves. I would just use an angle broom. Some drivers carried portable leaf blowers. There were times when only a washout would do. There were at least as many times when a reefer could be cleaned out by a driver in fifteen minutes as opposed to waiting in line at the truck wash for an hour or two. Either way it is better than having your trailer rejected at the customer.

At my age, I am not fond of climbing in and out of trailers. When I do, I am careful. Remember that more truckers get injured around their trucks than in them. Use the same 3 points of contact getting in and out of trailers that you would getting in and out of your tractor. Most trailers have a grab handle on them. Use it. If your trailer does not have a grab handle use a door. Open the passenger side door and use the drivers side door as a handle. Make sure that it is securely latched and test it before using it. Also make sure that your ICC bumper is safe to stand on. There was a day when I could jump in and our of a trailer. Even if you still can, don't.

Prevention is always easier than repairs. Ask your customer if you can sweep your trailer out while it is in dock. It is rare to have a customer reject that idea. They usually have brooms shovels and buckets available. Use the dock light. Keep the dock plate in. I have fallen between the trailer and the dock plate. At best it is embarrassing, at worst it can cause a serious injury.

Take pride in your work. Providing a clean trailer to your customer is just a little thing. It is just one of the little things that can make a big difference.

We ship a lot of paper rolls. I am always checking for nails when I sweep.

Even though I haul for routine customers that aren't too picky, I still like taking the time to sweep out in between. It is my little way of letting them know I care about what I am transporting. It is amazing what 10 minutes and a dust mop can do for the inside of a dry van!
