Old is Cool

I’ll admit it. I am a fan of old, and not just because I am old. I was a fan of old before I became old. Just now the old stuff, I remember when it was new. My wife would leave me for a 1968 Chevelle SS.  A 1962 Corvette would lead me astray.  I will always fondly remember by 1972 Mustang. As a kid I remember sitting in the back seat of a Packard. There was no way that I could even reach the back of the front seat. It was awesome.

Over the summer I have had the privilege of attending truck shows that feature these older trucks. The truck museum in Walcott, Iowa is amazing. Many of the trucks had hard rubber tires. The drivers of the day did not trust pneumatic tires. Those things must have beaten the drivers half to death. Still, I would like to take one for a spin.

My brother had an MGA. My neighbor up here has an MGTD. When I was a kid my neighbor had a Triumph Stag. One of my old buds has a TR8. I always wanted a Spitfire. Those old British Sports cars were so cool. I’ll always remember the old saying, if you’re going to buy a Jag-buy 2-so you will have one to use while the other is in the garage. Those old Lucas systems from the 60s and early 70s kept the cars purely British. While you may not enter a Mazda Miata in a show, they are hands down better than the old British Sports cars of my youth.

The new Corvettes are spectacular when compared with my dream Corvettes. These new ones are technological marvels. They had the Le Mans series races at Elkhart Lake (Road America) a few weeks ago. There was a guy with a 2008 Corvette that he had driven in from California to watch the races. He said that he had traded in his 1998 model on the new one. I had to ask-knowing the answer-Which one is better? He replied-hands down the new one.

He was staying at the same motel as I was. There was a truck show there. We both marveled at the older trucks. What can I say-A geek is a geek. He finally asked me which one is yours-I proudly pointed at my 2013 Evolution.  I told him how I show this truck to people that walk by. Little kids love to get up in it. There may be a few people who are in the market. But, they aren’t at the show to buy. I’m not here to sell as much as just representing the brand, and the industry.  I told him by far my favorite people to show the truck to are the drivers who drove those cool old trucks. They just look around and appreciate the truck and say “wow, I wish we had trucks like this in my day.

true-As much as I would like to drive one of those old beast, it would not be 3,000 miles a week.

If I ever had to go back to what is called the good old days... I would want to take my Cascadia Evolution along for the ride.
