For you road warriors who are out there keeping America moving over the Thanksgiving holiday, thank you. I know finding a healthy holiday meal may be difficult…or is it? Eating smarter and healthier does not mean you can’t enjoy yourself; you just need to pick your priorities.
I know this a special time of year when we all really enjoy treating ourselves to good home cooking, but for many of us there are two ingredients we need to be aware of: sugar and salt. At home you have some control over these, but on the road it may be more challenging. Here are some tips and steps that I hope you find helpful… and don’t be afraid to ask for low-sodium portions!
Here are the top three mistakes most make on their food choices this time of year:
- Starving yourself for one big meal. You need to fire up your system so eat breakfast.
- Having too much sodium. Watch the intake and don’t add more salt to already prepared food.
- Not taking the time to let your brain send the message to your stomach you are getting full. Eat slowly and enjoy the food and company. If you are at a restaurant, it's doubtful the restaurant is going to run out of food!
Here are 10 steps to follow to have a healthy Thanksgiving on the road:
- Drink plenty of water when you first wake up and take a walk.
- Eat a smart breakfast so you will actually start burning some calories.
- Remember the 1/2, 1/4, 1/4 rule that means fill your plate with half turkey (protein), 1/4 vegetables and 1/4 carbs.
- Try to eat your protein first. The protein will fill you up.
- Try not to fill up on bread and rolls before your meal.
- Drink water with your meal to save on calories from sugary drinks.
- Try to eat early in the day.
- Take a 15-minute walk after dinner.
- Drink two large glasses of room-temp water to flush out excess sodium after your meal.
- Allow your food to digest before having dessert.
Have a happy, healthy holiday season and Roll Strong!
