When I look back over the years, I’ve spent many Thanksgiving holidays away from home. In my younger days as a food service driver, this was always a very busy time. We were responsible to deliver turkeys to many factories which were providing the turkeys to their employees. We were generally ramping up for Christmas as well so you can imagine it was a busy time. Still to this day, when I sit down to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, I’m reminded of the sacrifice and time someone took to make sure the food was delivered to the proper establishment.
Up until about seven years ago, Thanksgiving was a time when I transported Christmas trees from the North Carolina Mountains to various customers throughout the northeast. The smell of freshly grown Frasier Fir trees spread across hundreds of acres is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. The fragrance of pine lasted well after the season in my truck and trailer and was for months afterward a reminder of the holiday season.
This Thanksgiving, I won’t make it home on Thursday and therefore, our family celebrated a bit early. I enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal last Saturday with some family and friends. This year, my plans are to enjoy another Thanksgiving meal at the TA/PETRO in Meridian, MS, Tuscaloosa, AL, or Carnesville, GA. I would like to thank the many service employees throughout the trucking industry who make the day special even if we can’t be a home with our loved ones. There’s always a warm welcome ready at the TA/PETRO and this year they’ll be offering a Thanksgiving feast on the usual buffet. If you happen to be on the road this Thanksgiving holiday, maybe I’ll see you there! I came across a video from TA/PETRO regarding Thanksgiving and I wanted to share it with you.
I wish to thank my fellow drivers for their hard work and sacrifice to move our goods and services across this great nation. I would also like to send out a huge thanks to our military members who work and serve to protect us each day. We are forever grateful for your service and sacrifice.
HAPPY THANKSVIGING TO ALL!
