Belgium, WI

Truckers learn good places to stop. We have places to stop for dinner, breakfast, or a required DOT break. Belgium, WI has become a favorite place for me to take a 10 hour break. It is about 80 miles south of Green Bay and about 35 miles north of Milwaukee. The next truck stop southbound is Oak Creek, WI about 50 miles away. Location and ample parking draw truckers to Belgium and the How Dea Truck Stop. The amenities keep us coming back.

The truck stop restaurant (Hobo's) itself is well above average as truck stops go. The only drawback is it is only open from 6am to 10pm seven days a week. There are plenty of places within walking distance of the truck stop. The Lake Church Inn is east of the truck stop towards Lake Michigan. It is a great place to enjoy some local Wisconsin faire. There is a more hopping tavern and grill including indoor volleyball courts just south of the truck stop. Downtown Belgium is just west of the truck stop and there are sidewalks the whole way.

The interurban trail, www.interurbantrail.us , crosses through downtown Belgium. The trail stretches 30 miles from Port Washington, WI to Cedar Grove, WI. An extension into Sheboygan County is in the works. The blacktop surface is welcoming to even the finest road bikes. It is also slightly softer on a runner’s legs than the concrete sidewalks. The trail goes about 7 miles north of Belgium to the town of Cedar Grove. It stretches more than 20 miles south to the city of Port Washington. Unlike many Wisconsin trails you do not need to purchase a trail pass to ride your bike on this trail. Many Wisconsin trails require an inexpensive permit to ride your bike on them, while hiking or running is free.  The interurban is not part of that system.

One of the problems that comes with increased fuel mileage is that I don’t acquire as many “free” showers from fuel purchases. Most of the major truck stops charge at least $10 for a shower if you don’t purchase fuel. When I use my card there is a $3 transaction fee. So even if I fuel more often than necessary there is a cost to the showers. The truck stop in Belgium only charges $5. So the net shower cost is only $2.

Belgium is on the www.rideandroll.me map. The package that Belgium offers, make it an ideal place for the active trucker to take a 10 hour break. There is a hotel across from the truck stop, or the Lake Church Inn if you need a 34 hour restart.  There are places like Belgium all over this great country. I enjoy sharing the ones that I know. I also like hearing about new places. If you have your own “Belgium” leave a comment and let me know.

Nice to see friends-Kurt you are absolutely right. Finding the trail near Belgium was a complete accident. It was actually the inspiration for "the map". I have only been to that Sapp's in Denver once, but I remember the trail. Jubitz?

It is always surprising to me how many drivers are unaware of what surrounds many truckstops. I enjoy the bike trails near Jubitz, and walking/biking along the trail at Sapp Bros. near Denver.

I too have a list of favorite places to stop. Some of my favorite stopping points are where old friends live so I can stop and visit in person.

The restaurant is good. The town is close. The trail (for me) sets it apart. I definitely have several places that I look forward to stopping at.

We drive all over the United States and we have areas we like better then others, trucks stops we like better then others, but it is hard to come up with a favorite. We have a couple customers that are our favorites due to their location, allowing us to sleep on their property, and usually because there is a neat local diner we enjoy. We also have favorite places we like depending on the time of the year....
