Lake Wobegon Trail

The trail exists. The town is impossible to find. The town of Lake Wobegon-that time has forgotten. The decades cannot improve. The women are sturdy. The men are all handsome. The children are all above average. Lake Wobegon is supposed to be the county seat somewhere in the middle of Minnesota. I can't seem to find it, but have enjoyed the search.

The trail itself is 46 miles long. It runs from St. Joe, Mn to Osakis, Mn. There are plans to extend it to the St. Cloud metro area. There are at least 2 points of easy truck access. The easiest is in Freeport. You can park your truck on the street next to the trail. There is only room for about 4 trucks there, but I have always been able to get a spot. Freeport embraces the legend of Lake Wobegon. Check out Charlie's restaurant. The side track tap is within walking distance. And of course the large Lutheran Church is nearby.

Sauk Centre is a larger town. There is plenty of parking. There is a large truck stop on the south side of I94. On the north side of the highway, nearer town and the trail, the Mac Donald's has a large dirt parking lot. There are hotels adjacent that also welcomes truck The Wal Mart actually encouraged truck parking and is less than a mile from the trail. Sauk Centre is proud to be the hometown of novelist Sinclair Lewis.

The trail is often visible from I94. It is blacktopped, but a little worn in places. It appears and disappears from view as you drive along I94. Take a look at the website www.lakewobegontrail.com for more information. If you are going to stop for a quick run or ride, I suggest stopping in Freeport. It is easy on and off of the interstate. You can be running or riding quickly. For overnight stays I recommend Sauk Centre. The truck stop has plenty of overnight parking. It is a little further from the trail, for cyclists this should not be a problem. Runners may want to scoot over to the north side of the interstate.

Both Freeport and Sauk Centre are on the www.rideandroll.me map. Check out the map for other trails near truck parking. I hope that you get a chance to check out the trail and search for the town. Also, please let me know if you have other places to run, walk, or ride near truck parking. We can share that knowledge with other truckers.

I could not find them either. I did notice that ALL of the children were above average.

I think Cliff and Irene Bunson can tell you where Lake Wobegon is.
