Dating back to at least the 1600’s, the phrase “Fit as a fiddle” has its origins in that of a finely tuned instrument that was deemed suitable for producing quality sound.  A musical instrument, such as a fiddle, that is not tuned and fit cannot properly perform its music on-pitch.  Similar to this, our bodies are our own instruments that we must keep fit and in-tune.  Without proper diet and exercise, even the most in-shape person will begin to get out of shape and perform to a lesser standard.  Although some truck stops are installing gym equipment and changing to healthier menu options, I know first-hand as a trucker that there is a lot of downtime to be had that can be taken advantage of to get into better shape.

The FIT (Freightliner In-cab Training) system, developed by Rolling Strong and Freightliner Trucks, takes the lack of gym access and ample downtime of a typical trucker into consideration.  This system is a set of resistance bands that install to the current securement mounts within the sleeper of your current and past Freightliner truck.  These bands are easy to install and offer a resistance of up to 150 pounds to each arm!  Think about it, when was the last time you were sitting at a customer eating some unhealthy snack, when you could have been doing a couple easy abdominal exercises?

As if your shipper/receiver downtime was not enough time to work out, this system can also be used outside of the truck as well!  The FIT system comes with accessories that allow it to be used in a hotel room or your home as well, for those nights when you get a reprieve from the inside of your cab.  This system eliminates the excuses for not having the proper environment and equipment to stay in shape on the road.

Although I do not spend nights on end like most sleeping in my truck, I do spend an ample amount of time sitting at shippers and receivers like most in our industry do.  It is a rare occasion that I have a customer load/unload a truckload of freight faster than within 45 minutes, which leaves ample time to squeeze in a 20-30 minute exercise routine.  When I look to workout in this manner, it is not so much about getting a full-on, high-intensity workout where I am dripping sweat when I am finished.  Don’t get me wrong though, use of the FIT system can do that for you as well!  For me, it is about getting the heart beating and getting the muscles I rarely use in my day-to-day to feel a little bit of action.  In this manner, I am able to keep my already fit body in-tune and functioning the best it can.  By doing this, I can ensure less risk to minor injury such as sprains and strains.  Exercising is not just good for the body; it’s good for the mind and soul as well!

I have found the FIT system to be very simple to use which encourages me to work out more often.

Bravo Jimmy,

Now if we can just get these into the cabs of every truck it can make a difference. I think it should be standard equipment like rain gear or a jacket. Then there are no excuses for not getting at least a bit of a workout in.

Enjoy the miles,

Don

I really look at the FIT system as an injury prevention system. It works on strength and range of motion, Many truckers and owner operators get hurt in preventable on the job accidents-such as slip and falls. We do our best to avoid otj injuries. A little conditioning can minimize the extent of the injury. I.e. missed time.
